The Cambly “student can’t call me” issue.

Guest post by The White Rabbit.

Hi all, this is just a quick post to help those tutors experiencing the recent issue where you have a reservation and you think the student hasn’t turned up.  Basically the issue here is that the student is calling you but you don’t get any notification, so the student assumes you are not online and you  (and the Cambly system, which will pay you the ten minute wait time) assume the student has missed the reservation.

This has led to several interesting encounters with students messaging me demanding to know why I wasn’t at my reservation, or students finally connecting after 5 or 6 minutes and angrily asking me why I was late when I’ve actually been waiting for the call! So not only am I missing out on time and money, I’m guessing a few irate students may give me low ratings!

What to do if you have this problem?

So, after discussing this with some students, here are a few work arounds. First, message your student when you are online, politely let them know you are around and are looking forward to their class. If you have back to back reservations, message the student in advance of your class. This lets the student know you are online and available.

Several students have said that they were able to contact me when they switched from their PC and used their mobile.  A student today said that they couldn’t connect to the reservation, but they went to the tutor “online list” and they were able to connect by clicking on my profile.  Also, get your students to contact student support and make them aware of the problem.

Tell Cambly about the issue!

Send a message to tutor support and inform them (politely, they are a small team after all) of the issue. I’ve been having this issue for over a week now and hopefully as more tutors experience it and contact Cambly, it’ll get flagged up as something for the software gurus to work on.

That’s about it really for today. For further updates check out  our twitter @camblytutors
